Events of the Week: This week we continued our Author Study on Laura Numeroff.

  • Language Workshop: We read several “If you give books”. The students enjoyed hearing about the cat, dog, pig, and mouse. We identified the characters and setting in each of the books and compared the stories. We also had several fun crafts the students made this week associated with the books.

  • Writing Workshop: We continued series of events writing.  We practiced by writing the steps we take to get ready for school.  We started by using a graphic organizer to write the process of getting ready in the mornings.  Then we used the organizer to transfer it to our published copy.
  • Reading Workshop: We are continuing to work every day on applying the reading strategies to figure out unknown words in our books.  I am excited about the progress the girls and boys have made so far this year.  I will be assessing end-of-year reading levels in the next couple of weeks.  Please encourage your child to use the reading strategies when he/she is reading with you at home.

Friday Note - April 13, 2018

Events of the Week:
Math: We worked on counting objects to 20.  We grouped them into sets of 10 and leftover ones.  We are counting in two ways right now--the traditional way of counting (for example:  16) and the “say 10” way (ten six). This may seem confusing at first, but this is a great way for students to learn about the tricky teen numbers--to see that the number 16 is a set of 10 and 6 ones.
Language Workshop: This week we learned about farm animals.  We talked about how plants, animals, and humans are alike and different (needs, habitats, etc.).  We discussed how plants, animals, and humans can change the environment to meet their needs. The students chose one farm animal to research this week. They had research journals and found out what their animal eats, where they live, what the baby is called and a fun fact about their animal. They did great!! The students also made a map of the farm they wanted to build. Today they built their own farms during our Makerspace time. They had a lot of fun!! I hope you enjoyed the pictures on SeeSaw.

Writing Workshop:  This week we focused on writing about farm animals. The students made silly sentences about farm animals during writing center time. We wrote in our research journals during the two days of research. They did a fantastic job! The students then wrote four sentences about their farm animal for the final farm building project. They wrote a sentence about the habitat, what they eat, what the babies are called and a fun fact. The writing turned out wonderful!

Reading Workshop:  We are continuing to work every day on applying the reading strategies to figure out unknown words in our books.  I am excited about the progress the girls and boys have made so far this year.  Please encourage your child to use the reading strategies when he/she is reading with you at home.
Word Study:  Our sight word was “this” and our bonus words were “must” and “new”. We also worked with various word families during our word sort time. We are learning to make new words by changing the beginning sound.  Next week, we will begin changing the middle and ending sounds also to make new words.
