Friday Note - 2/23/18

This Week:Our theme was universe. Our sight word was “of”. Thursday was Jump Rope for Heart.  Thank you to all who donated to the American Heart Association.

  • Math:  We continued our unit on subtraction. We focused on decomposing using manipulatives, drawings, and number bonds. We also introduced how to write a subtraction number sentence. The students practiced all week using different strategies to show their knowledge of solving a subtraction problem.
  • Language Workshop— We learned about the universe.  We asked questions and read books called Sun, Moon, Earth, and Stars. We also watched videos on BrainPop Jr. Then, we listed key details and new vocabulary words from each book.  The students really enjoyed learning about this topic.

  • Writing Workshop—We practiced writing an opinion piece using a graphic organizer to help us organize our thoughts.  An opinion piece consists of three sentences (or more).  The first sentence states an opinion (I like inside recess.).  The next two (or more) sentences give reasons why. The students each wrote an opinion piece about inside or outside recess.

  • Reading Workshop—Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on different reading skills.  During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.

  • Word Study— We focused on the -at family. Students participated in various activities where they had to identify a picture and match it to the correct word.

Friday Note - 2/16/18

NO SCHOOL MONDAY!

This Week:
  • Math: We began our unit on subtraction.  Please take time to look over your child’s math page with them daily.  This is a difficult concept for some kindergartners to master as they want to count the amount in each group rather than determining the difference between the groups.

  • Language Workshop: We read many different nursery rhymes this week.  We made Jack and Jill and Hickory Dickory Dock books so they can practice retelling the Nursery Rhyme at home.  We used sequencing cards to sequence and retell the rhyme Hey Diddle Diddle.  We had to glue Humpty Dumpty together again and made up our own story on why he fell, they are hanging in the hallway.

  • Writing Workshop: We continued working on expanding our writing. We are working on writing more than one sentence on the same topic.  We also focused on turning boring sentences into exciting ones by adding more detail.
  • Reading Workshop: Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on specific reading skills and strategies.  During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.
  • Word Study: Our sight word was “in” and bonus words were “went” and “there”.   We worked on building CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words by focusing on the short a and short i sounds.

Important Dates:
  • Feb. 19:  No School (Presidents Day)
  • Feb. 22:  Jump Rope for Heart (during our P.E. time)

Friday Note 2/2/18

This Week:  We started off the week by celebrating the 100th day on Monday followed by the                                                                                                 101st day with a Dalmatian Celebration on Tuesday.  What a fun way to begin our week!

  • Math—We practiced counting to 100 (by ones, fives, and tens) for our 100th day celebration!  We learned to use a hundreds chart and worked on some fun 100 day activities!  We read several 100 day books during math.  On Wednesday, we began decomposing and composing addition stories with sums of 6, 7 and 8.

  • Language Workshop—We did some additional research on seals.  We also enjoyed watching video clips of seals.  We reviewed the list of facts that we wrote last week.  The class insisted on adding a few more facts this week.  Using this knowledge we then listed several things that seals are, what they have, and things they can do.

  • Writing Workshop—As a class, we used the seals facts anchor chart to write a short informational paper.  Then students created their own informational writing paper about seals to hang in the hallway.
  • Reading Workshop—Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on specific reading skills and strategies.  During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.  I hope that you are able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with you at home.
