Thursday Note - 3/29/18

NO SCHOOL TOMORROW!

Events of the Week: Our theme was plants. Despite the wet weather, the kids really enjoyed the egg hunt. We found out that Ms. Crim’s 3rd grade class won the penny war.  Thank you for helping raise more than $1,300 for our school!
Math: We continued to practice addition and subtraction within 10.  Your child should be able to complete a number sentence without assistance at this point.  If there are blank problems left on the page that is for your child to complete at home. These pages do not need returned unless there is a note attached.  We completed an assessment over fluently adding within 5.

Language Workshop: We read different books about plants and talked about what plants need to grow. The students made a flip book explaining what plants need to live and grow. Make sure to ask them to show you! Next week we will discuss the parts of a plant.

Writing Workshop: We wrote sentences about plants. We read the book The Tiny Seed and made a flower craft to go along with the story. The students then wrote what their favorite part of the story was on the flower pot. This week the students also answered the writing prompt: “What would happen if I planted a jellybean?” They had fun with that! We are also working on adding details to our writing.  Our sentence writing is getting better every day! Continue to practice writing sentences at home.
Reading Workshop: Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on different reading skills.  During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.  I hope that you are able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with you at home.
Word Study: Our sight word was “was” and our bonus words were “into” and “that”. We also worked with –en, -et, and –eg word families.  We are learning to make new words by changing the beginning sound.

Friday Note - 3/23/18

Events of the Week: Our theme was spring.  We spent the week learning about how the season affects plants, animals and people.

Math: We continued to practice addition and subtraction within 10.  Your child should be able to complete a number bond and a number sentence without assistance that illustrates a number story.  Please take the time to look over your child’s math worksheet every evening to assure that they are understanding this important concept.  Today we played subtraction bingo with fruit loops and they did great!

Language Workshop: This week we read two informational books about spring.  The students wrote about key details they learned from the books.  We discussed the changes we are seeing outside.  We learned about how the weather changes in spring and how the behavior of animals and people change as well.

Writing Workshop: We continued to work on opinion writing.  We wrote our last opinion piece about our favorite part of school.  Students did well getting their thoughts down on the opinion organizer, then they were able to transfer that information to the "published/clean copy”.

Word Study: We introduced sight words “said” and “at”.  We also worked with –op, -ot, and –og word families.  Bonus words this week were “came” and “say”.

Events of the Week: Our theme was weather.  We spent the week learning about different types of weather.  We also finished up all third quarter assessments.

Math: We practiced composition and decomposition with number stories to 10.

Language Workshop: Each day we focused on a different type of weather.  We read various informational books as well as fiction books about weather.  We conducted a few weather experiments, made some observations, and watched videos of different kinds of weather.  During makerspace time, students were instructed to build a structure that they think will withstand a tornado (blow dryer).   We had fun testing their structures :)
Writing Workshop: We wrote an opinion piece about our favorite kind of weather and spent time writing in our journals. Our opinion writing is hanging in the hallway.  I am so proud of how well they are doing on their writing!
Reading Workshop: I have been meeting with students in their reading groups this week. We have focused on reading and using our reading strategies when getting stuck on a word. The other students worked in literacy centers practicing standards that have previously been taught.
Word Study: We reviewed sight words.  I am very impressed with how well each child was able to read the sight words.  Please encourage your child to work on reading and writing sight words at home. Clever Families,

Teachers and students are gearing up for the last week of the 3rd quarter! The end of the quarter will be Friday, March 9th. Spring Break is the week of March 12th-16th, and students will return to school on Monday, March 19th.

Spring Parent Teacher Conferences are right around the corner. They will be held on March 20 & 22 from 3:30-7:30pm. Information will be sent home from your child’s teacher regarding the specifics, and grade cards will be shared with parents at this time. In our continued effort to bridge the relationship between school and home, we look forward to seeing each family in attendance.

May is approaching soon and that means it's almost time to be thinking about summer school! Clever Schools will be offering summer school from May 29th-June 21st. We are putting the final touches on the electronic registration, and it will be sent out soon after Spring Break.

As the trees begin to blossom and spring approaches, I am reminded of how much our students have blossomed this past quarter. They are busy working hard and learning new things each day. Give them a big hug and tell them how proud you are of their personal growth this past quarter!

Friday Note - 3/2/18

Events of the Week: We celebrated Dr. Seuss.  We had a lot of fun participating in various activities during the week!  We even got to try green eggs and ham.  It was yummy!  We were also busy with third quarter assessments.

Math: In math we are working on decomposing the numbers 9 and 10 into different parts.  The “Decomposing Numbers” assessment was sent home yesterday.

Language Workshop: We read several Dr. Seuss books, including The Cat in the Hat, The Sleep Book, Wacky Wednesday, Green Eggs and Ham, and many more.  We did fun activities with the books, including finding opposites in the book One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish.  Ask your child which Dr. Seuss book is his or her favorite.
Writing Workshop: We practiced writing an opinion piece using a graphic organizer to help us organize our thoughts.  An opinion piece consists of three sentences (or more).  The first sentence states an opinion (I like playing on the playground.).  The next two (or more) sentences give reasons why. Next week, the students will each write an opinion piece about their favorite type of weather.
Reading Workshop: While working with students in our reading groups, I am noticing that some students are struggling when they get to an unknown word.  We are working hard on trying out the different reading strategies.  When reading with your child at home, PLEASE do not simply tell your child a work he or she is stuck on.  Please help your child figure out the word by using the various reading strategies.  Here is a picture of the reading strageties in case you need it:

Word Study: We focused on the -ad and -an word families. We also practiced building words that have the -ad and the -an endings (dad, man, sad, mat, etc.).  We enjoyed finding the silly rhyming words in the Dr. Seuss books.  Our sight words for the week  were “do” and “not”.

Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences:
Spring conferences will be held March 20 and 22.  This conference will be a “showcase” style for your child to show off what he/she is learning, so be sure to bring your child with you to the conference.  Please visit this link to sign up for a time.  Let me know if you have any questions.  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090848a8a92fa0f49-spring2
