Friday Note 4-28

Events of the Week: This week we continued our author study on Laura Numeroff.
  • Language Workshop: We read more “If You Give” books, including If You Take a Mouse to School and If You Take a Mouse to the Movies.  We continued to discuss story elements, cause and effect, and retelling events in order.  Our focus story was If You Give a Pig a Pancake.  We wrote about the book and did a fun art project.  Be sure to check these out in our hallway!  In addition, we enjoyed some of her other books.  One of our favorites was Dogs Don’t Wear Sneakers.  The students also enjoyed her book of poems, Sometimes I Wonder if Poodles like Noodles.
  • Writing Workshop: We continued our series of events writing.  Students sequenced what they did at their last birthday party.  We are focusing on putting the events in the correct order and making sure our writing makes sense.
  • Reading Workshop: Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am having each student read to me independently to determine their end of year reading level.
  • Word Study: This week we focused on prefixes and suffixes.  We learned about how these can change the meaning of a word.  We added re- and un- to the beginning of words and added –s, -ed-, and –ing to the ending of words.
  • Math: We continued the unit on solid figures (cylinder, cone, cube, and sphere).  The students enjoyed learning about these new shapes and finding them in our classroom.

Important Dates:
    • May 2 - Kindergarten Field Trip
    • May 16 – Last day of school! We will dismiss at 11am.  Breakfast will be served, but lunch will not.

Kindergarten Field Trip

Don’t forget to be reading with your child every night.  This can be accomplished by reading the books that come home in their book bags or by completing the 4th Quarter Reading Challenge.  Reminder:  Book Bags are due each Friday and the Reading Challenge is due on May 11th.

Individual and Class Pictures
Spring pictures were sent home on Tuesday.  If you would like to purchase your child’s spring pictures, payments are due by May 5th.  If you are not purchasing the pictures, please return them by May 5th.  You may also purchase individual sheets of the photos (instead of the entire package).  The prices and instructions are in the packet.
Group/Class pictures are also available.  If you would like one, please send $2 in an envelope with your child's name on it and the purpose (i.e class picture).  I will then send a class picture home with your child.  Thank you.
