Friday Note 3-31

Events of the Week: This week our theme was plants. Our sight word was “was”.

Language Workshop: We read different books about plants and talked about what plants need to grow. Next week we will discuss the parts of a plant.

Writing Workshop: We wrote sentences about plants.  Monday we wrote about what we thought would happen if we planted a jellybean.  I love how creative they are!  We also wrote about the parts of a plant.  We are working on adding details to our writing.  Our sentence writing is getting better every day!  Continue to practice writing sentences at home.

Reading Workshop: Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on different reading skills.  During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.  I hope that you are able to see them using these reading strategies when they are reading with you at home.
Word Study: We talked about our 5 senses.  Each day we learned about one of the 5 senses and did a fun activity to reinforce what life would be like without our 5 senses.  We did a taste test, a touch activity and played hearing bingo.

Math: We worked on number sense this week.  We played games to reinforce all numbers 1-100 and different concepts like less, greater, addition, subtraction, and we used the 100’s chart.

Friday Note 3-10

Events of the Week: Our theme was weather.  We spent the week learning about different types of weather.  The student’s that earned their 3rd quarter reading journey enjoyed going to different classrooms today to read. We also finished up all third quarter assessments.

Math: We worked in math centers to review addition and subtraction.  During this time I pulled small groups to work on these skills.  Please continue to work on these skills at home since switching between the two is often difficult in kindergarten.  Remind your child to pay extra close attention to the + and to know which operation they need to use.

Language Workshop: Each day we focused on a different type of weather.  We read different informational books as well as fiction books about weather.   We also conducted a few weather experiments.
Writing Workshop: We wrote an opinion piece about our favorite kind of weather.  I am very pleased with how good their writing is!  They did a great job with writing this week. Please look over your child’s writing and continue to practice at home.
Reading Workshop: While working with students in our reading groups, I am noticing that students are struggling when they get to an unknown word.  We are working hard on trying out the different reading strategies.  Many students are having a hard time with saying the letter sounds and then blending the sounds together.  When reading with your child at home, PLEASE do not simply tell your child a word he or she is stuck on. Instead ask them what strategy they could use. This will help them become independent readers.
Conferences:  Thank you to everyone who has already signed up for a conference time!  For those who have not yet singed up please follow the link below to do so as soon as possible.         http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090848a8a92fa0f49-spring

Attendance Incentive

To the Parent or Guardian of a Clever Elementary School Student,

We are excited for the upcoming Spring Break and will be refreshed and ready to finish off the year strong! Upon our return, elementary students K-4 will be participating in a 4th quarter Attendance Incentive. Students who earn 92.5% (3 days or less) or better attendance from March 20th through May 15th (40 days) will get the opportunity to participate in a special outdoor play time with an ice cream social. This will take place on Monday, May 15th during the school day.

Attendance will be calculated using our ADA/ADM hourly attendance report that is submitted to DESE. All absences, check-in/check-outs, and tardies will contribute to the student’s overall attendance percentage. We will not be looking at excused or unexcused. We understand that kids get sick, emergencies happen, and kids have to leave for appointments, but would like to recognize those students who work hard to come to school and are ready to learn each day.

We are excited to be able to offer this incentive to our students and hope many of them will make the effort to earn the 92.5% daily attendance goal.  Thank you for the ongoing support. If you have any questions, please contact the elementary school office.
