Friday Note - 2/16/18

NO SCHOOL MONDAY!

This Week:
  • Math: We began our unit on subtraction.  Please take time to look over your child’s math page with them daily.  This is a difficult concept for some kindergartners to master as they want to count the amount in each group rather than determining the difference between the groups.

  • Language Workshop: We read many different nursery rhymes this week.  We made Jack and Jill and Hickory Dickory Dock books so they can practice retelling the Nursery Rhyme at home.  We used sequencing cards to sequence and retell the rhyme Hey Diddle Diddle.  We had to glue Humpty Dumpty together again and made up our own story on why he fell, they are hanging in the hallway.

  • Writing Workshop: We continued working on expanding our writing. We are working on writing more than one sentence on the same topic.  We also focused on turning boring sentences into exciting ones by adding more detail.
  • Reading Workshop: Students are working daily in Literacy Centers.  While students are working independently, I am meeting with small groups to focus on specific reading skills and strategies.  During independent reading time, students are practicing the skills they are learning during small groups and using their reading strategies.
  • Word Study: Our sight word was “in” and bonus words were “went” and “there”.   We worked on building CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words by focusing on the short a and short i sounds.

Important Dates:
  • Feb. 19:  No School (Presidents Day)
  • Feb. 22:  Jump Rope for Heart (during our P.E. time)
  • Feb. 23: Box Top contest ends
  • Feb. 26-March 2:  Dr. Seuss Week (more details below)
  • Feb. 28:  Cox CARE Mobile

Book Bags
Keep reading and returning the book bags every Friday.  Also, please encourage your child to read these books several times before returning them.  It would be best if you are reading the books each night.  Please take care of these books while they are at your house and make sure they are being returned.  Thanks!

Celebrate Reading ~ Dr. Seuss Week ~ February 26-March 2
Please encourage your child to participate as we celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday all week.  We will read different books each day.
Monday - Cat in the Hat - Hat Day
Tuesday - Sleep Book -  Pajama Day
Wednesday - Wacky Wednesday -  Wacky Clothes Day
Thursday - Hooray for Hair -  Crazy Hair Day
Friday - Fox in Socks -  Crazy Sock Day

Reading Journey
I hope you and your child are finding a special time each night to work on our reading journey.  Remember, our goal is to complete twenty reading activities.  This reading journey will end on March 8th.  Reading logs need returned by March 8th in order for your child to “travel” to different kindergarten rooms during our read-a-thon on March 9th.

Next Week:
  • We will begin a unit on the Universe.
  • We will continue working on understanding subtraction.
  • Our sight word will be “of” and bonus words are “want” and “our”
  • We will continue building CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words and focus on short o and short e sounds.
  • We will introduce opinion writing.

Have a great weekend!!
Mrs. Vaughn
