Friday Note 9-30

Events of the Week

Math: This week we started a new math topic over numbers 1-5.  We practiced identifying, counting, and writing each number.  Please practice writing these numbers at home with your child.  Earlier in the week, I assessed each child over measurement and I am excited and proud to say that every student scored proficient on this test!  This assessment was sent home today.

Language Workshop: Our focus this week was on color review.   Our book for the week was Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?.  We read and practiced retelling this story using our story wheels.  We also made our own “Brown Bear Reader” to add to our book boxes.  Students had fun buddy reading with these books.  We also read several other fun color books like The Day the Crayons Quit, When the Crayons Came Home, and Pete the Cat: I like My White Shoes.  We wrote a letter to a crayon that went along with the book The Day the Crayons Quit.  I asked students to label their pictures and they did a great job sounding out the words!

Reading Workshop: This week during literacy centers I worked with students in small groups on being able to identify sight words, letters and letter sounds.  Next week I will be reading with students individually checking their understanding of concepts of print.  I’m using a level A text with sight words they should know (Ex: I like apples.).  I am asking your child questions such as, “Can you show me where to begin reading?” “How many words are in that sentence?” “Where would you read next?” “Can you point to an ending mark?”.  I’m also looking to see if they are using the picture for clues.

Writing Workshop:  Each day we wrote a sentence from the story Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?.  As a class we set at the carpet with a clipboard and talked about what we were going to write for the day.  Once we decided what our sentence was we counted the number of words in the sentence, we used sight words and color words to complete the sentence.  Once the sentence was complete, students got to draw a picture to match the sentence.  We call this process “Interactive Writing”.  Look for these papers in their folder.  Your child should be able to read each page to you independently.

Content Workshop:  We did several different color mixing experiments this week!  We used water color, shaving cream and water to mix primary colors to make secondary colors.  We predicted what color we thought it would make then recorded our results.
We also got to finger paint with primary colors and experiment to see what new colors we could come up with.
Our sight word was “see” and our letters for the week were “Ff” and “Dd”.
